In the simplest of terms, if we treat one section of the community as inferior, they will oblige by acting as such. But if we treat this section of the community as equals, what explanation can they accept for their inability to compete on a level playing field, besides prejudice ? That a few blacks may be intelligent doesn't mean that they are in general. Then again, why argue for racism on any premise?  The answer one may then get is: they are anti-social eg 'TNB' .  Of course the follow-on from that will be: why are they anti-social? . They aren't being treated as inferiors.  They're being treated as equals, but equal under the law doesn't mean identical.  We cannot treat everyone identically.  It doesn't make sense give a person a medical degree and allow him to practice just because he is black, or to give a person a law degree just because he is black.  Being equal should mean only that they have equal opportunities to advance, not being advanced in spite of their lower level of ability. There was a study published in 1999 in Scientific American showing how, irrespective of race, lower IQs produce lower incomes, worse living conditions, higher crime rates. etc.  By the results of those studies, the only trait where blacks excelled beyond the expectations of their IQ was crime.  Their average income, education level and living conditions were completely in line with the measure IQ levels (that information wasn't in the report - it required one's own analysis).  Crime, on the other hand, was much higher for blacks than would otherwise be expected.  Lower IQ poor-white-trash show crime rates 2.5 times that of the national average, while blacks show crime rates 12 times that of the national average.  A black man is 200 times more likely to rape a white woman than a white man is to rape a black woman. (http://www.standarte-slc.com/race05.html).  Contrary to what one sees in the media, blacks are two and a half times more likely to commit race-related hate crimes as well (http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/hatecm.htm). On the other hand, psychology shows that people who commit crimes think of themselves as being justified.  People who steal from the work place typically consider it justified because they are underpaid, people who rob feel it justified because they are underprivilaged, etc..  Perhaps the reason blacks are 12 times more likely to commit crimes than their white counterparts is because of folks like yourself who tell them they are justified to expect preferential treatment, and being treated only as equals makes them feel cheated.  Perhaps you are the problem. Although you may find it nice or politically correct to treat blacks as identical whites, doing so lacks common sense.  Treating them as equals, of course, is a necessity.

Even if this level playing field could be guaranteed, the perception of fairness would always be coloured by our mutual historical baggage ! Even if opportunity and advantage were provided to African Americans, equality demands that the measure of success be determined by the standards of white and Asian Americans. Any standard set by them, unless it achieved statistical equality, would be perceived as inherently unfair by African Americans and create resentment and distrust that would be passed on from one generation to the next. Any lowering of the standard, to create the perception of statistical equality, would create resentment among white and Asian Americans and lend credence to their belief that African Americans can only achieve a contrived equality .
