This is not a technical limitation but a basic fact about the compilation process. The compilation process removes all information about comments, whitespace, preprocessor macros, identifier (variable, function and type) names, and such things, and only leaves the basic function calling and information passing skeleton. There are decompilers that decompile exe files to *some* C source code, but that source code will most probably be so illegible it won't be of any practical use beyond recompiling on another platform to try to achieve a modicum of portability.

Short answer 1: This is off-topic in comp.lang.c, and should be asked                 in a forum appropriate to your platform and purpose.                 In this case, may I suggest asking in the                 comp.os.os2.programmer.tools forum? Short answer 2: No, and especially not for OS/2 executables.                 (It has been tried on other platforms, but                 I doubt that there are any examples for OS/2) Thanking you all in advance Nadia Lew Pitcher, Information Technology Consultant, Toronto Dominion Bank Financial Group ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) (Opinions expressed are my own, not my employer's.)

you can only, as far as i know decompile an .exe into ASM code w/h almost completely useless since a smal program turns into 10000 pages of ASM Code. IIRC, someone wrote a 'decompiler' as a thesis, and it worked under very limited conditions on an MSWindows (MSDOS?) platform. I would consider a 'decompiler' to be a fools errand (like trying to invent a perpetual motion machine). It would take intimate knowledge of - the execution platform, - the format of the executable module, - the specific compiler that the original program was compiled under, - the specific optimizations that the compiler performs, - the specific runtime that the compiler/_link_er includes into the .exe - the specific runtime that is dynamically _link_ed to the exe and would have to recognize (and recode into C) sections of the .exe that were not originally coded in C to begin with (statically _link_ed runtime, for instance). That's a big task, even when you know all the variables. Now, multiply by 1000 because you don't know anything other than it's an EXE that runs under OS/2. Add to that list that to get the actual original source code, the C decompiler would have to be psychic. This is because the original source code probably includes some things which do not affect the resulting exe file at all.
