I have been binding my unpublished books by hand in very small numbers for family and friends for a number if years. These presentation copies look quite nice with laminated color-printed covers, but the problem is the paper. I can only buy white or whiter-than-white standard letter size 20 lb paper, which is harder on the eyes than the off-white shades used by the printing industry. Most good quality books are printed on pale coffee-colored (POD paperbacks) or various other off-white shades. Pocket paperbacks usually have dirty-looking newsprint type paper. Does anyone know of a source for 20 lb letter size paper in various shades (24 lb is too thick for a book)? Staples has a number of different shades but they are all 24 lb and they say nothing is available in lighter weights. Even 16 lb might do. Thanks, David Bradley Just published by Wexford College Press! Harry's War is an exciting story about growing up near London, England during World War II. See more at http://www.dedwardbradley.com.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write such an informative reply, which I'll keep on file. My problem was obviously not understanding about paper flexibility, texture etc relative to weight. I've just looked at what I consider a good quality trade paperback

grain of the paper. Grain is an alignment of the fibers that naturally occur in the paper making machine that tends to follow the direction of the conveyor that moves the pulp mush into the screens and rollers of the machine. If a book is bound with the grain direction parallel to the spine, the pages will turn more easily and there's less chance of getting a wavy spine. Books bound with the grain direction perpendicular to the spine will seem to be stiffer and the pages will be less easy to turn. Assuming that your homemade books are printed 2-up on standard size sheets, you'll end up with the grain perpendicular to the spine, as paper is normally cut with the grain parallel to the long edge of the sheet. Paper merchants _might_ be able to obtain paper with the grain parallel to the short edge, but it is not readily available in every brand and sheet size. Grain direction has a fairly significant impact on the way a sheet of paper handles. You can easily check grain direction by tearing a sheet of paper without creasing it before you start your tear. If your tear continues fairly close to the direction you initiated, then the sheet is oriented in the direction of the grain. If the tear curves and is otherwise resistant to tearing, then you're trying to tear across the grain. (This test is most obvious with newspapers.) So, you have paper thickness, the finish (and amount of 'fluff' in the paper), _and_ grain direction all impacting the ultimate feel of the bound book.
