so that I would not be able to hook anything to it. Does this mean I'll have to anchor them into the brick? What do you mean by fire place cover ? If you mean glass doors, then you may have to drill. My doors also came with a hook for the lintel (the top bar running the width of the fireplace ) but as luck had it, the attachment using this technique didn't work very well on my fire place. Whether it will work on your fireplace probably depends on whether a clamp can grip the inside and outside edges of the lintel (i.e., does the mortar come right up to the edge of the lintel? Can you scrape some away?) Luckily, the alternative is not too hard. Drilling the brick with a conventional (non-impact) drill and masonry bit, inserting lead anchors, and fastening the doors didn't take long in my house. BTW - all lintels have bricks on top. The purpose of the lintel is to support the weight of the bricks above.
