sniper manuals Garand Sniper field manuals?
Recently got M1-D from DCM. Anybody know of existence, or source, of GI field manuals or other instructional info, covering mounting of scope, zeroing, aiming, use of cheekpiece, flash hider, etc??   Seems there must have been something like that printed up sometime. I have  field manual for standard garands, and technical manual that covers a bit on MI c and d, but nothing on how to actually use them.  Thanks.

I have a copy ofArmy Field Manual FM23-5 dated September 1958. It has a chapter called Advanced Marksmanship - Sniping, that includes mounting, sighting in and care of the M1C Rifle with M84 scope. Also goes into sniper training and methods. It is the only literature I have come across regarding the operation of Garand Snipers. Mike

I have not been able to find anything as well except for the standard field and tecnical manuals issued by the Dept. of the Army. None of these helped much. All I know is what I have learned my self. The elevation turret is calibrated in yards. Look at the numbers on the turret and it starts with either 0 or 1 (I don't remember). What you have to do is take your rifle to the range with the given load and shoot it at least at 100 yards, 200 is better, and get the scope to zero. After you have got the post and cross hairs to hit where you want look at the turret and see what the number is. If it is not calibrated ( which it probably won't be) loosen the nut that holds the turret in place. Be careful as the screw is only slotted on the out side of the center nut. Loosen the nut and turn the proper number to the mark on the scope. It then should be reasonably calibrated. You can do the same to the widage knob as well, although it needs to be a calm day. When you get the windage centered loosen the knob and set it to the 0 mark. I believe the windage is set to feet but it could be inches, it has been awhile since I have done it to mine. Hope this helps, let me know if you need any more help.

Folks, If you read Canfield's _M14 Rifle; from John Garand to the M21_ you'll come to realize that sniping has always been a bastard child in the US Army. There's never been much in the way of doctrine (or so I have been led to understand) or training.  The Marines are more hip, as I understand it.   There have been outstanding individuals in the US Army in this field, but collectively not much attention.  A great example is described by Canfield.  After much hard work the M21 system was deployed to Vietnam; on arrival the rifles where issued without regard to their intended mission and where used as just another batch of replacement M14s. Contrast this to the Wermacht and the Red Army, where sniping was an art form much honored and the subject of exhaustive research, training and doctrine. So I'm not surprised the M1C and M1D are essentially undocumented. Remember that the M1D was really a kit gun, i.e., M1Ds were assembled at depot level from SA-supplied kits and standard M1s (Yes, I know that SA built a few samples at the end of WWII to demonstrate the concept). Hope this gives a little background. Regards, Walt Garand Collectors Association

#If you read Canfield's _M14 Rifle; from John Garand to the M21_ you'll come #to realize that sniping has always been a bastard child in the US Army. A correction from Clint McKee: Canfield did *not* write that one, it was *Blake Stevens* :0 Ooops!  Sorry! Regards, Walt

WIf you read Canfield's _M14 Rifle; from John Garand to the M21_ you'll A small correction: Bruce Canfield has a lot of _title_s to his credit, but that is not one of them. R. Blake Stevens was the author of that particular book.
