Hello there, I'm doing some research for a University Buisness Project on selling online Car Maintanance Manuals in chapters, and hoped anyone with a car could help by answering five quick questions? - Your Age: - Do you own a car maintanance manual (I.e. Haynes)? - Why / Why Not? - Would you consider buying a chapters of Haynes manuals online, at a much lower price, for printing when you need to perform a certain task? Example chapters would include: ? Weekly Checks (Oil, Batteries, Break Fluid, Steering Fluid, Screen Wash, Coolant, Wiper blades, Tyres, Fuses) ? Engine Repairs ? Transmission ? Brakes and Suspension ? Bodywork and Electrical Systems - What price would you consider reasonable for such a booklet? Less Than ?1 ?1 - ?2 ?2 - ?3 ?3 - ?4 ?4 - ?5 ?5+ Thank you for any responses given, - Dan Margetts.

First off, can I just say that this is a bloody good idea. - Your Age: 24 - Do you own a car maintanance manual (I.e. Haynes)? Yes - Why / Why Not? Because it's a handy resource - often it's not needed to refer to for the basics, though on something a bit complex with engine undertrays etc., it's handy to have it there just as a quick reminder, mainly just the first time doing a job, just to check what bits might need to come off to do a particular job. It's also useful to be able to understand just how complex the more complex jobs are, even if not attempting them yourself, to put yourself in a vaguely knowledgeable position when dealing with garages (handy to be able to tell if they're pulling a fast one i.e. telling you something was broken when the chances are they broke it when removing another part). It's also handy to have a read through a particular job that needs doing, just to ascertain what tools will be needed for the job, and/or to consider whether or not the job is doable on the driveway full stop. - Would you consider buying a chapters of Haynes manuals online, at a much lower price, for printing when you need to perform a certain task? <snip Yes - even for something I'd be fairly unlikely to attempt myself, if it was around 50-60p/chapter (which answers your next question) it's a small price to pay for a very handy bit of knowledge about whatever it is that may be broken on my car. - What price would you consider reasonable for such a booklet? Less Than ?1 - yup. It'd have to be this cheap as a whole brand new Haynes manual is around ?15-16, and people would want the whole thing for about ?5-6, taking into account lack of printing costs/retail profit/transportation costs. So about 50p/chapter for a downloadable PDF would be about right. Being able to download a whole Haynes manual for about 5-6 quid and have it in electronic form would be very handy - no need to worry about getting greasy fingerprints all over it - just chuck it in the bin and print another one off if and when it's needed. <<Thank you for any responses given, - Dan Margetts. - What price would you consider reasonable for such a booklet? Less Than ?1 ?1 - ?2 ?2 - ?3 ?3 - ?4 ?4 - ?5 ?5+ Well here's the difficult thing , most haynes manuals are available for between 15 and 20 quid delivered and typically have about 12-15 significant chapters which would make them worth between ?1 and ?2 each. I wouldn't feel too hard done by at ?2 a throw given the potential savings , but once you start to get much above that it's easier to buy a complete manual that can be used and then resold for a tenner (they do hold their value well) when the car is sold. It's a damn good idea though and something I would use

Nowt personal - but dont you even consider the possibility that people on usenet get sick of being regarded as nothing more than sheep fodder for university surveys . Somebody should do a survey about that.

Nowt personal - but dont you even consider the possibility that people on usenet get sick of being regarded as nothing more than sheep fodder for university surveys . WTF? It's hardly THAT common. It seems like a perfectly sensible place to ask to me, and as long as it's not some thinly disguised spam or email address collection scheme I'm quite happy. Besides, it's a damned sight less OT than some threads we get on here
