Removing the earth terminal will not prevent damage to electronic components In fact it will only make it worse, the battery acts as a very big capicitor, and absorbs the spikes. FWIW I have never removed or disconected battery, alternator or anything else when welding, and have never had any problems.

FWIW I have never removed or disconected battery, alternator or anything else when welding, and have never had any problems. Damage is indeed unlikely..........but in some circumstances is certainly possible. If you have done some welding without taking the correct precautions, and then you find something doesnt work, then the welding will have caused the problem. Chris

the liklihood of damage is not great, but in the case of ECUs costing several hundred pounds is certainly worth bearing in mind. Chris This is the sort of thing I was thinking about - presumably there is some high voltage spike protection somewhere because of the sparks generated by the ignition system. Just wondered if this was enough. John

Depending on where your welding, have a fire extinguisher handy too. Should read ALWAYS. And if you're welding underneath lying on your side...for God's sake wear earmuffs. That nasty crackle as a bit of spatter is cleverly funnelled down your lughole by your ear so it can set fire to your ear hairs isn't nice. If the slag gets as far as your eardrum you can be in serious trouble.

& a bucket of water. It's cheaper. A bucket of water will spread a fuel or brake fluid fire if you accidentally burn through the pipes.
