Background: 1978 Volvo 242GT with 80K miles.  Transmission rebuilt at 30K (before I owned it). I have 2 problems. 1. At low speeds in second gear when you take your foot off the gas it    pops out of gear.  This problem is new. 2. Transmission fluid leaks out of the place where the speedo cable comes     out of the overdrive.  I have had the seal there replaced but was told     by the mechanic that it would still leak.  He was right.  This leak is     particularly annoying because the only way to add tranny fluid is from     under the car with a pump and the only way to check it is by removing a        check bolt from under the car (and even then all you can tell is that          it is not right up to the bolt which it never is as it leaks).  The manual     specifies Type F Automatic trans fluid for this manual transmission.     Would switching to a heavier gear oil a)leak less, b) work ok, and     c) not damage the transmission?  When I bought the car there was something     other than Type F in there as it was not red.         Tom Page         This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

At low speeds in second gear when you take your foot off the gas it    pops out of gear.  This problem is new.         I had this very same thing happen on my 84 Saab. After a year of this this 'minor' annoyance, all of a sudden I lost 5th gear (110k mi).         End result:         synchros were shot on 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. Total rebuild.         I suggest that you get in and fix it before more damage occurs.
