Picked up a used '97 XR400 on the weekend. Stone stock except for having the baffle removed. Rode it for 2 hours yesterday. Coming from a CR and not having owned a 4-stroke since an '82 XR200, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I really like it. Good thing, as I talked my wife into the bike by saying it would last me at least 3 seasons... I flipped through the owners manual. Compared to my CR manual, there is nothing there. The section on front suspension says to grasp the front brake and push up and down. The forks should move freely. So I called my dealer about Honda's service manual. $116. Ouch! Is there another source for basic info like recommended fork oil weight, the range of oil height adjustments, complete torque values, etc? Does Clymer have a book on the XR400? I seem to remember reading recently about an XR400 competition booklet that Honda sells for $7, but my dealer has no info on it.

I got a few e-mail replies regarding the XR400 service manual and alternatives. If I want the service manual, I can order it from the US for much less that the $116 my dealer wants. However, Honda's booklet en_title_d XR400R Competition Handbook should be all that I need. This booklet was reviewed in the September Dirt Bike and is available from Honda dealers for $7.95.
