I have set up a Genicom 3480EP printer as a spooled device off my 987. The printer is hooked up to a JetDirect box and has an IP address. We use the printer as a label printer, sending formatted labels from QUIZ to it. I set up the printer in NPCONFIG.PUB.SYS as pjl_supported=false and jam_recovery=false. When the user (in abuilding a block away) tried to print labels on it, we told us nothing happened. We set up the printer as a printer off our network and we were able to print the Windows test page to the printer. I then checked out the printer and I was able to print a listing out of QEDIT to the printer, but the listing would start on the 45th line!! This now explained why nothing came out when they user tried to print something - his listing was less than 45 lines!! Sometimes, but not all the time, the first line appears to be several lines overstruck. When I tried to print a small report, all I got was one line that said 10V -12345X -12345X Anyone got any hints - seen anything like this? thx steve hammond (as an aside, if any of you a women's soccer fans, look for me Thursday night working as a photo marshall at the US-Germany soccer game. Unless the Genicom can speak minimal PCL, you are hosed. This is IMO a basic flaw in HP's network print spooler that CSY shows no interest in correcting. Serial printers do not need to understand PCL (termtype 18 and x-on/x-off handshaking and you are in business) - old timers will recall that this was not always the case, however, so I suppose one should not give up hope. The response from CSY has been, and probably will continue to be, that there are third-party solutions which will handle any sort of printer and network card you wish to use. [Note: there is an, as far as I know undocumented, way to bypass the need for an official HP JetDirect interface; place SNMP_ENABLED=FALSE in npconfig.pub.sys along with the other qualifiers for the printer in question. I have been able to use this to drive a serial printer off an Intel Netxport box.
