Hi, When we moved to this house, in Ithaca, NY,  we brought along our old washer and gas dryer.  This house came with a nearly new (about one or two years old) electric dryer and front loading washer. My DH wants to hook up the old gas dryer (The site for the W/D is about 3 feet away from the gas hot water heater and gas furnance so it would be easy for a plumber to extend a gas line) and sell the newer electric dryer.   On a purely stupid level, I like the fact that the new dryer and washer are so fancy looking.  Our old dryer isn't.  But on the other hand, if it would be cheaper to run, I would enjoy the lower electric bills much more than gazing at a fancy dryer. So before we do this, I wonder what an older gas dryer cost in per-hour-use verses a newer electric dryer. Are there any websites about this?  Does it matter that's it's an older model (a Whirlpool Imperial model 80) gas dryer? The electric is a Maytag. We've noticed that electricity is much more expensive here in NY than back in PA.  A rough estimate of running the gas line is about $100, we want to be sure that we'll make that up in utilities savings. If we sell the electric dryer we'll still keep the front load washer(a fridgedaire) - it cleans much better than our old top loading washer. chris and her fancy electric dryer

I would say that an older Whirlpool dryer will likely last longer than a newer model, even a 'Maytag' except if it's the 'Dependable Care' Maytag line. I myself would go with the older Whirlpool even if it costs you a bit to have the gas hooked up. You should be able to make up for any installation charges by selling the newer Maytag for more than you could get by selling the older Whirlpool. I checked and the Maytag is a Dependable Care one.  So if I understand you correctly then, a Dependable Care Maytag is perhaps worth keeping?  What makes it more special than any other electric dryer?  It does seem to dry clothes quickly  However I wonder if part of that is due to the front loading washer - it spins pretty darn fast and clothes are half way dry coming out. the only reason you might have to justify keeping the electric dryer and not replacing it with your old non-matching gas dryer would be if the washer and dryer were located in your living/family room next to your home entertainment system and you would be looking at them while watching TV!   (;- Good point . . though you gave me an idea - if we keep the fancy dryer, we should put it and the washer in the foyer so guests could admire them upon entering.     Chris busy with fabulous decorating ideas, eat your heart out Martha!

half way dry coming out. The Maytag Dependable Care line is the laundry equipment Maytag is famous for. The other lines are _base_d on the Norge product line that Maytag purchased years ago. In my opinion it is not near as good a design as the other and seems to be cheaper made (what isn't now a days?). I myself would still prefer the gas model although there are some repair jobs homeowners might need to call a professional for. Whereas, most repairs on an electric dryer can usually be done without a service technician. Maybe use the gas and keep the Maytag as a spare? Or you can use which ever one has the lower utility rates at the time. The front load washer does likely contribute to the dryness of the clothes before the dryer, which would make either seem more effective.
