It turned out to be NZ$50+ just to get a technician to look at my years old lump of junk. So I wound up just buying a new scanner/printer. With discounts of about 20%, I got it for NZ$388. The model is a Canon Pixmar MP500. It can print on CDs and DVDs, and I even have the cartridge and gear to load them in. The catch is that I've never seen a CD or DVD for sale here in NZ that's intended for printing on. *grins at Poly* It's also got separate colour ink cartridges, so no more running out to buy a new colour cartridge when I've only run out of one colour from three. There's an internal paper tray as an option, so I'm less likely to leave it open and get dust in it that way. Unlike the old one it also handles duplex printing, so no more having to 'borrow' the family laser machine with NZ $250 refill cartridges if I need something multisided. I might just get some use out of my thermal binder now that I have a printer that works.
