On the other hand, complex graphics and halftoning and stuff can often be printed faster on a laser printer, depending on what you're printing. My first printer was a dot matrix. The problem was that after 3 or 4 pages full of graphics, the ribbon was dead. How is that for expensive ? Not to mention it was so loud that everyone in the house knew about it ... I wouldn't even think about using a dot matrix for graphics at an office ...

Go away and don't come back until you have a clue.   David, I hope that you don't mind my piling on, but the suggestion of   a dot matrix printer having any relevance today sends chills up my   spine!   I just went searching for a new job, within the company that   I'm currently working for.  I did my resume with _frame_Maker (as I have   for the last couple of years).  I printed a copy at work (I use a Unix   license there) with a decent laser printer (IBM 4029) and then brought it   home to tune ('doze FM4 version under WinOS2).  I printed a copy on my   lowly HP 660Cse and wow!  It looked *far* better.  This was on the   same 24lb off-white paper.  Add to this the ability to put an accent   with the same color as the folder that I sent the information packet   out with, made the presentation flawless.  I heard from four hiring   managers (out of six).  All four were impressed by the presentation.  I got   three offers, another was too late, because of his management's problems.   No, I would not do this with a dot matrix printer of any kind.  I'm no longer   interested in a laser printer.  I don't do enough printing.  A laser printer   is nice for listings, but I do little of this at home.  I really like the versatility   of the ink jets.   Keith R. You're suggesting that we all have two printers, a dot matrix *and* a laser; the former for printing drafts and listings, the latter for printing final output and graphics.  While I won't argue that there may be some who need listings in such quantity and with such frequency that a dot matrix printer might be useful, the fact remains that while a dot matrix printer can print drafts and listings it *can't* print with the same quality as a laser, and at the same time a laser can do most of the things a dot matrix can (i.e. drafts and listings), and do them better. But for significantly higher cost. Tell any developer to use laser print for all his listings, and see what reaction you get. Alistair

  And what's so hazardous about a toner cartridge? Toner is explosive, for one thing...   It's plastic, with toner (don't tell me toner is hazardous, considering how   much we rely on photocopies). Just because something is widly used doesn't mean it's safe.  DDT was widly used in the USA before it was banned.   (In any case why should I care?) The environment isn't something that we inherit from your parents.  It's something that we borrow from our children. Would you like air so poluted that your children can't breath it?  Or water that they can't drink?   (I don't think it's been conclusively proven that PCB's are hazardous.) My wife does _professional_ printing of technical reports.  Her one and only output device is an Epson LQ-1050 24-pin dot matrix printer. It does 180x180 by default, or 360x360 with two passes.  It works great, the output is very nice, and we already owned it when she started.  'Nuff said.         ChipDude         let him who is without old hardware throw the first flame

     Hello,            I have a Epson Spectrum LX-80 dot matrix printer.  Now I am using a HP LaserJet 4L.  The printer itself can print in near letter quality mode.  Under DOS/Windows 3.1 I have installed Adobe Type Manager.  I think I had it print truetype fonts as graphics and the output was pretty good.  Not nearly to the quality of a laser printer but very nice for a dot matrix.  Better than you would expect.                                           John
