inks laserjet 4550n Any experiences with HP JetDirect Printservers (not add on printer cards)
Hi all, i am searching for people that could help me on how to configure a network printer that is connected to an HP JetDirect Printserver. In my special situation i am trying to print to an HP LaserJet 4P which is connected to Port 1 of a JetDirect 500x Printserver. At the moment i have no point from which to start from. The Printing HOWTO from linuxprinting.org just tells me that the LaserJet 4P works fine under linux and there are some infos about Network Printers that have an HP JetDirect addon ethernet card plugged in. But nothing more. In the Undernet #linux chan somebody told me that the best way to get printers on a JetDirect Server to work would be to use Samba. Any suggestion on that ? Would be really great if anybody in here could give me a point from which i could start. Thank you much, Grand Apeiron

In my special situation i am trying to print to an HP LaserJet 4P which is connected to Port 1 of a JetDirect 500x Printserver. Here's a snippet from our /etc/printcap for such a beast: # Datastation Printer (First) lj5m1:         d=/var/spool/lpd/lj5m1:         :mx#0:         h:         f:         :lp= This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it : # Datastation Printer (second) lj5m2:         d=/var/spool/lpd/lj5m2:         :mx#0:         h:         f:         :lp= This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it : # Color LaserJet 4550 in Datastation lj4550:         d=/var/spool/lpd/lj4550:         :mx#0:         h:         f:         :lp= This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it : Basically, after configuring tcp/ip on it, just point to the printers named raw1 , raw2 , and raw3 on the port.  No, they don't document this in the 500x documentation

This Linux printing thing is really a bit too weird and shows why Linux isnt the the right desktop system for a normal user. But come time come solutions. It's changing.  LSB is looking into standardized printing tools and most distributions are finally getting rid of the decrepit berkeley printing system, in favor of CUPS (www.cups.org).
